A tyre pressure monitoring warning is one of the more commonly ignored dashboard lights, partly because it frequently appears when nothing dramatic seems wrong. It is worth understanding what it is telling you.
Two Different Warnings
A steady warning symbol generally means one or more tyres is below the threshold the system is set to. That is the ordinary case, and it means check and inflate.
A flashing warning, typically for a period before becoming steady, usually indicates a fault in the monitoring system itself rather than a pressure problem. That is a garage matter.
The exact behaviour varies by manufacturer, and the handbook is the authority.
Cold Mornings
The most common trigger. Pressure falls with temperature, and a drop of ten or fifteen degrees is easily enough to cross the warning threshold.

What to Do
- Check all four tyres with a gauge, cold if possible

- If one tyre keeps going down, it has a leak and needs inspection
The System Is Not a Gauge
The important limitation. Monitoring systems are typically set to warn at around twenty-five per cent below the recommended pressure.
That means a tyre can be meaningfully under-inflated, enough to affect handling, braking and wear, without triggering any warning at all.
Waiting for the light is therefore not a substitute for checking monthly. The light is a backstop, not a maintenance schedule.
Indirect Systems
Some vehicles do not measure pressure directly. They infer it from wheel speed sensors, since an under-inflated tyre has a slightly smaller rolling radius and turns faster.
These systems require a reset after any pressure adjustment or tyre change, and they cannot detect all four tyres losing pressure equally, which is exactly what happens as the weather cools.
After a Tyre Change
Sensors live inside the wheel and can be damaged during fitting, and some systems need relearning after a rotation or a new set.
A warning that appears immediately after tyre work is worth raising with whoever did it rather than assuming it is a pressure problem.
Do Not Ignore It
Under-inflation causes heat build-up in the sidewall, and heat is what destroys tyres. Severe under-inflation at speed is a recognised cause of blowouts.
A warning light is the cheapest possible prompt to avoid that, and it takes minutes to act on.
Sudden Loss
A warning accompanied by a change in handling, a pulling to one side, or an unusual noise means stopping somewhere safe rather than continuing to a garage.
